NSSE's making the news, and in pretty good ways. Here's the point I'd like to blanket the country with:
When courses provide extensive, intellectually challenging writing activities, the NSSE report found, students engage in a variety of positive activities. They are more likely to analyze, synthesize and integrate ideas from various sources. They grapple more with course ideas both in and out of the classroom. And they report greater personal, social, practical and academic development. (from USA Today)
While I'm not fully convinced that this kind of survey really lets us know what's going on inside college classes (and a lot of elite schools don't participate in NSSE, for reasons that I think are reasonable), I will say that the writing questions on NSSE are the result of a collaboration with the Council of Writing Program Administrators -- WPA actually designed the questions.
